I am not a fan of the time change or this thing they call daylight savings, I would rather adapt to adjusting naturally to the change of seasons. This new Chronos messes with my sleep cycle, and changing the clocks in our home and vehicles is a challenge each and every time. Move the clock an hour this way and then an hour in reverse, why not just meet in the middle and start half an hour later year round? Can’t our work days and schools start 30 minutes later! Well anyway, I am not a fan of this time change.
But I believe all of us humans always resist any type of change! Well, I have lived in the same region all of my life and one would think I would surely have become used to this biannual change by now, but it is still a struggle! It seems like whenever I get comfortable with a routine, a change comes my way.
Although some changes are necessary as they are corrections in my thoughts, habits and routines, after all, I am way too worldly and travel the wrong paths on occasion. Maybe if my phone had an app for that, possibly the app could be named SINNER, in the course of my daily paths I would hear a beep and a voice saying “stop looking over there, mind your business, you should read this, or you’ve had too much pie” (if there is such a thing as too much pie), perhaps with the additional help I could then be closer to Christ than I am right now! Well I am sure I would have important discussions with that app like I do with Alexa on things like how to pronounce McGaheysville; that Yankee really struggles with that one. Maybe this app could be Southern and I would hear “Bless Your Heart”, but it would need to be blunt and not run a circle around the barn!
But after saying all that, would I really earnestly hear these corrections and want a different path when I can continue doing the same things, the same way as I have always done? Or just dismiss them and restart my usual routine, maybe I will work on those things later, when I have time! St Theophan the Recluse addresses our use of time in the following way:”The Lord chose the apostles, that they should be with Him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils. Every Christian is chosen—chosen for similar deeds, namely: to be with the Lord, through unceasing remembrance of Him and awareness of His omnipresence, through the preaching and fulfillment of His commandments, and through a readiness to confess one’s faith in Him. In those circles where such a confession is made, it is a loud sermon for all to hear.”
The saint continues: “Every Christian has the power to heal infirmities—not of others, but his own, and not of the body, but of the soul—that is, sins and sinful habits—and to cast out devils, rejecting evil thoughts sown by them, and extinguishing the excitement of passions enflamed by them. Do this and you will be an apostle, a fulfiller of what the Lord chose you for, an accomplisher of your calling as messenger. When at first you succeed in all this, then perhaps the Lord will appoint you as a special ambassador—to save others after you have saved yourself; and to help those who are tempted, after you yourself pass through all temptations, and through all experiences in good and evil. But your job is to work upon yourself: for this you are chosen; the rest is in the hands of God. He who humbles himself shall be exalted.” (Thoughts for each day of the year by St Theophan the Recluse)
Well there is plenty of work to do on me and the snow has already started to accumulate on my ole leaky roof. Maybe or as long as the authorities keep Daylight Savings Time, I can use it as not only a reminder to change the batteries in my smoke detectors, but to also make some changes in my firm grip on the crutches of worldly things. without doubt a time to ask just how have I grown since the last time change? I think it is bout time!!
